Absolute Salsa is based in Derbyshire, UK, and organises and promotes salsa related events and dance classes.
Absolute Salsa is owned and operated by Lee Hunter. Lee's career started at the age of eleven doing all types of dance: Disco, Latin and Ballroom. At the age of fifteen he was ranked 2nd in the world as Junior (under 16). At eighteen, he was approached to move to Holland to compete again and to teach in one of the largest dance studios in Holland with a member listing of over 1800 pupils. Lee's first teaching job was teaching the youth in classes of 100 people at anyone time.
Reaching 2nd place in the National Dutch Championships Latin American discipline and 3rd place in the Ballroom discipline had given him the opportunity to represent Holland in the World championships, achieving a world ranking of 28th. After travelling as far a field as Eastern Russia, Denmark, Austria, Germany, France and Belgium, including appearances on Come Dancing and Dutch National TV, Lee returned to England in 1996 after living in Holland for 5 years. He still has connections in Holland and teaches out there 4-5 times per year, training the competition couples and salsa enthusiasts.
In July 2000 Lee was introduced to salsa by one his students, Bryan Gorse. After one evening he was hooked.
In April 2001 Lee met Cyldra Schierbeek, better known as Miz Brown Sugar. Cyldra danced in the same competitions over in Holland but she and Lee had never met. At the next Pontins in Pakefield, Cyldra asked Lee to partner her for the Cha Cha Cha class, which she was running. Lee agreed and they arranged to meet the next morning to go through the lesson. Cyldra asked Lee to actually take the class. With just under 300 people in the class, you can safely say that it went well, with the majority of the participants in stitches. The room was electric! Everybody loved the lesson, and Lee was booked immediately to run the classes at the Brean Sands Christmas Event. This was to be a challenge, as it required 5 workshops and demonstrations. Folks the rest is History!
2002 saw Lee working alongside Torvill and Dean at the National Ice Rink Centre, Nottingham. This is the second time he has worked alongside these two legends.
In September 2000, Lee set up Absolute Salsa . He then opened his events to the general salsa population. A combination of a quality venue and excellent value evenings now being held at the Asterdale Club, Derby , has led to the success of Absolute Salsa Ltd. Since setting up, he has booked live bands, excellent dj's and top teachers. The evenings have been said to be the best in the social calendar, definitely not to be missed! Lee's classes are very well attended. His teaching style is relaxed and the classes are split into 70% enjoyment and 30% learning.
